Volunteer

Thanks for your interest in volunteering with PMHS!

Volunteering provides you with the opportunity to work directly with homeless pets or to provide support and assistance to shelter staff so that we can better care for the animals. We provide volunteers with specific training to safely and efficiently assist shelter staff and the many animals in our care.

Pope Memorial Humane Society is dependent on volunteers to assist with many aspects of our operations. Whether you are interested in direct animal care, special events, or administrative work – we can use your help!

If you’re interested in volunteering with us, please complete our volunteer application and we will be in touch to schedule an orientation and training sessions.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help us in the following areas:

Existing volunteers log in here:

.

New volunteers start here:

Direct Animal Care

Cat Team
Volunteers assist with cleaning cat cages and litter boxes, feeding cats, and spending some time to socialize with the cats to help them feel more comfortable here in the shelter while they wait for their forever homes. All cat team volunteers must complete our basic cat care training.

Small Animal Team
Volunteers on the small animal team assist with cleaning cages and feeding the small animals, checking water, and spending some time socializing with the small animals as appropriate. All small animal team members must complete our small animal care training.

Dog Walkers
Our shelter dogs need to be walked several times each day both for bathroom breaks and to help them use up some of their energy and have a break from their kennels. Dog walk volunteers take the dogs for 20-40 minute walks around the area surrounding the shelter. All dog walkers must complete our dog walker training.

Volunteer Requirements for Direct Animal Care Positions:

  • We require a minimum 6-month commitment to the shelter.
  • Depending on the position, we request a minimum of 4 shifts per month.
  • Volunteers ages 14-15 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 21 during their volunteer shifts. This person must also attend orientation and all applicable trainings.
  • All scheduling is done online through our scheduling software Volgistics. Volunteers must sign up for their shifts in advance. Because we are a busy and fast-paced animal shelter, we are not able to accommodate walk-ins.
  • A one-time $10 donation is suggested at the time of your orientation. This donation helps us to offset the cost of administering the volunteer program.

We are happy to sign off on volunteer hours needed for graduation requirements however it is against our policy to accept volunteers seeking to fulfill court-ordered community service.

Events

Humane Education Team (Ages 16+)
Pope Memorial Humane Society is proud to offer Humane Education programs at no cost to our community. Our mission is to provide quality, compassionate care and shelter to our animals, in partnership with educating the community concerning humane animal treatment and welfare. We offer a variety of programs for people of all ages to educate them on the care, safety, and overall well-being of animals. The Humane Education Team is currently looking for volunteers and certified therapy dogs to help with our presentations at local venues. If you are interested in joining the Humane Education Team we’ll schedule a time for you to meet with our Humane Education Coordinator after you’ve been through the orientation process.

Special Events Team (Ages 12+)
We encourage volunteers with past events experience to get involved with our special events and fundraisers. Volunteers who participate in our special events must be customer service oriented, friendly, and outgoing. Event volunteers must also be familiar with PMHS and the services that we provide so that they can answer questions that are asked by event attendees. If you’re interested in joining our special events team, please contact Melanie Burger at [email protected].

If you have any questions, contact Danielle Howard, Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected].
